Charles-Michel de Salaberry commanded the Canadian Voltigeurs at the Battle of Châteauguay in October 1813, where a force of roughly 300 men — predominantly French-Canadian militia — turned back an American column of several thousand under Wade Hampton. The American advance on Montreal was effectively ended that afternoon. De Salaberry has occupied an outsized place in Quebec's historical memory ever since, his victory frequently cited as proof that French Canadians fought and bled for British North America on their own terms.
This issue is part of the RCM's War of 1812 bicentennial series, which ran across multiple years and featured both British commanders and Indigenous allies alongside figures like de Salaberry.
