Edward VIII's abdication in December 1936 meant no British currency bearing his effigy ever entered circulation — the Royal Mint had prepared dies but destroyed production before release. Pobjoy has issued several Edward VIII commemoratives over the decades, effectively filling a numismatic gap the abdication created.
