The House of the Sun — Coricancha — was the most sacred structure in the Inca Empire, its interior walls reportedly sheathed in hundreds of sheets of gold leaf until Spanish conquistadors stripped them bare in 1533. The Dominican convent of Santo Domingo was built directly on top of its foundations in Cusco, a deliberate act of religious erasure. The 1950 earthquake that devastated the city cracked the Spanish colonial church while the Inca stonework beneath it remained structurally intact.
