Issued under the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) coin program, which ran from the late 1960s through the 1970s and recruited developing nations to mint pieces carrying agricultural themes as a form of soft international development messaging. Dominica's participation was modest — this 4-dollar piece is one of very few coins the island issued during the colonial period before independence in 1978. The denomination itself is unusual, sitting outside the standard Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority series and reflecting the ad hoc nature of FAO-sponsored issues.
