Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran through the 1970s and enlisted dozens of participating nations to mint special issues promoting agricultural development and food production awareness. Saint Lucia's entry came while the island was still an Associated State of the United Kingdom, two years before the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority replaced the existing monetary arrangements and nearly a decade before full independence in 1979.
FAO issues from small Caribbean Associated States are frequently underrepresented in collections — low original distribution and limited numismatic infrastructure at the time meant many were absorbed into the FAO's own promotional stocks rather than general circulation.
