The Wolf coin is part of the Royal Canadian Mint's long-running wildlife series, which leaned heavily on international bullion collector demand through the 2010s. The $4 face value is a legal fiction — a nominal denomination with no practical circulation intent, existing solely to satisfy the legal requirement that bullion issues carry a face value.
The .9999 fineness was a deliberate marketing differentiator against competing sovereign mints, most of whom struck at .999 or lower during this period.
