The Dominion of Canada 4 Dollar denomination is one of the more peculiar choices in North American paper money history. The denomination existed to service a practical commercial gap — cheques and transactions at that value were common enough that a dedicated note was considered worthwhile — but it never sat comfortably in public use alongside the dominant 1, 2, and 5 Dollar notes, and the series was discontinued without replacement.
The American Bank Note Company had relocated its Ottawa operation specifically to satisfy Canadian government requirements for domestic production. Pick 26 is genuinely scarce in any grade; survival rates are low relative to contemporary Canadian issues of higher face value.
