Obverse description Black intaglio-printed note with the bank title 'THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE' arched across the upper field and the denomination 'FOUR DOLLARS' in bold letterpress at centre, flanked by numeral '4' counters at each upper corner. The central vignette presents a pastoral cattle scene with a cow and calf in a farmyard landscape, while the left vignette bears a seated woman with a child. The note carries the place and date inscription 'TORONTO' with a manuscript date, two manuscript signatures of the Cashier and President, and a capital statement at the lower margin, all within an ornate lathe-work guilloche border.

Reverse description Printed entirely in green, the reverse presents an elaborate engine-turned guilloche design centred on an oval cartouche bearing the inscription 'THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE' in two lines, surrounded by dense lathe-work ornamental scrollwork. Numeral '4' counters appear at both the left and right within decorative frames. The entire composition is enclosed within an intricately patterned border of repetitive guilloche rosettes.
