| Obverse description | Central crowned Portuguese royal shield of arms, quartered with the castles of Castile and the quinas (five escutcheons) of Portugal, displayed in a Spanish-style escutcheon surmounted by a large royal crown. The mint mark 'L' appears to the left of the shield and the mark 'B' to the lower left, with the denomination mark 'IIII' to the right, all within a beaded inner circle. The circular Latin legend reads PHILIPPVS D G REX PORTVGAL L - IIII B, interrupted by pellet stops, struck on an irregular flan characteristic of hammered gold coinage of the period. |

| Reverse description | A bold cross pattée occupies the center of the field, its arms extending nearly to the inner beaded circle and dividing the reverse into four quadrants, each adorned with a cluster of pellets arranged in a quincunx pattern. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner border. The surrounding Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer') runs continuously around the outer field between the beaded borders, separated by pellet stops. The entire composition reflects the devout Catholic iconography characteristic of Portuguese royal gold coinage of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. |
