Obverse description The obverse reproduces in relief the design of the Canadian 4-cent stamp commemorating Cabot's voyage of 1497, depicting the sailing ship Matthew at sea with full sails. The legend CANADA appears at the top, the denomination 4¢ flanks the central device on both sides, and the dates 1497 and 1949 appear in the lower corners. A bilingual legend in the exergue reads CABOT'S MATTHEW NEWFOUNDLAND / LE MATTHEW DE CABOT TERRE-NEUVE. The perforated border of the stamp is replicated along the edge of the bar.
