Obverse description Left-facing bareheaded female effigy representing the Portuguese Republic, depicted with her hair gathered in a braided chignon adorned with an olive branch, rendered in high relief in a refined neoclassical style. The figure wears a loosely draped garment visible at the truncation. The field is plain and uncluttered, allowing the portrait to dominate the flan. The design is the work of engraver Francisco dos Santos.
