Schwyz was among the smallest of the original forest cantons yet maintained independent coinage rights jealously guarded against encroachment from larger neighbors. The "Örtli" denomination — a quarter of a Batzen system unit — occupied an awkward place in the confederation's monetary patchwork, where inter-cantonal exchange rates shifted constantly and local issues rarely circulated far beyond their home territory. Production ran only three years, likely reflecting the practical limitations of a small canton sustaining its own minting operation against the economics of such a short-lived series.
