Lucerne produced klippe restrikes of this type well after the original minting date, a practice common among Swiss cantons satisfying collector demand in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The square format was itself archaic by 1744, deliberately chosen to evoke earlier tradition rather than reflect contemporary minting practice.
