Obverse description The crowned arms of Lucerne displayed on an ornate oval shield, surrounded by elaborate scrollwork and a floral garland. A mascaron (decorative mask) is positioned below the shield. The peripheral legend encircles the entire design, with the engraver's initials I·B incorporated into the inscription. The overall composition reflects the baroque decorative style characteristic of Swiss cantonal coinage of the mid-eighteenth century.

Additional information

Lucerne produced klippe restrikes of this type well after the original minting date, a practice common among Swiss cantons satisfying collector demand in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The square format was itself archaic by 1744, deliberately chosen to evoke earlier tradition rather than reflect contemporary minting practice.
