4 Annas 3rd Air Depot Group; Officers Club

Military scrip issued by officers' clubs, messes, and post exchanges during World War II occupies a largely underdocumented corner of notaphily. These pieces were produced locally, often by commercial printers in-theater or stateside, and had no official military authorization beyond the commanding officer's sanction. The 3rd Air Depot Group was a Service Command unit responsible for aircraft maintenance, modification, and supply — not a combat outfit — and its club scrip would have moved through a very closed economy of maintenance crews, depot staff, and transient aircrew.

Four annas suggests an Indian theater posting, almost certainly somewhere in the CBI (China-Burma-India) command zone, where the anna was the fractional unit of the rupee. Denominating mess scrip in local currency rather than U.S. cents was common practice when the club's actual operating costs were settled in rupees.
