This note belongs to the Erfurt Chamber of Commerce's 1923 emergency currency series denominated in Gold-Pfennig pegged to the US dollar — a direct consequence of the hyperinflation that had rendered Reichsmark-denominated Notgeld arithmetically absurd by mid-1923. Tying the unit to a foreign currency fraction was a pragmatic workaround adopted by several German issuers that year, cutting through the chaos of trillion-mark valuations with something notionally stable.
Printed locally by Otto Richters & Co., the watermarked paper was an unusual security investment for what was ultimately municipal scrip. The Tieste reference Va#ERFT.10.01 places it at the head of the Erfurt gold-denominated sequence.
