Obverse description Central field displays the denomination '37½' in large numerals surmounted by a royal crown, with the date below and the mint mark beneath. A dotted inner border frames the design. The surrounding legend reads JOANNES·VI·D·G·PORT·BRAS·ET·ALG·REX, identifying João VI as King of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves by the Grace of God. Cross privy marks flank the denomination. The overall design is characteristic of the utilitarian colonial copper coinage produced for João VI's reign in Brazil.
