Yugoslavia hosted the Mediterranean Games in Split in 1979, and this coin was issued a year ahead of the event as part of a broader commemorative program. The Split games were notable as the largest Mediterranean Games held to that point, with over 2,000 athletes competing — a significant logistical and political achievement for a non-aligned socialist state eager to project stability and openness to the West.
