Ptolemy V came to the throne as a child of five following the deaths of both parents in quick succession — circumstances suspicious enough that ancient sources implicate palace factions in at least one of those deaths. His reign saw Egypt lose control of Coele-Syria to the Seleucids at the Battle of Panium in 200 BC, a territorial concession that permanently altered Ptolemaic power in the Levant. The co-regency issues bridging his reign into that of Ptolemy VI reflect a dynastic continuity the court was visibly anxious to project.

Svoronos 1423 is a heavy late Ptolemaic bronze, struck at Alexandria under the consolidating weight standard that characterized the reign's middle decades.
