Reverse description The crowned Portuguese royal arms of Maria I and Pedro III occupy the central field, rendered in elaborate baroque style. The quartered escutcheon displays the traditional Portuguese quinas and bordure of castles, surmounted by an ornate royal crown. The shield is flanked by highly decorative acanthus-leaf scrollwork and foliate mantling extending across the full field, with a floral ornament at the base. The composition is bold and deeply struck, consistent with the die-engraving standards of the Bahia Mint during the late 18th century.
