Lübeck's 32-Schilling piece occupies an awkward denominational niche created by the city's stubborn resistance to adopting the Reichstaler standard wholesale. While most northern German states were rationalizing their coinage around the taler by the mid-seventeenth century, Lübeck clung to its traditional Schilling-based reckoning — a commercial habit reinforced by centuries of Hanseatic bookkeeping that merchants were reluctant to abandon.
By 1671 the Hanseatic League itself had been effectively defunct for decades, its last formal Diet meeting in 1669. This coin postdates that final gathering by just two years.
