Issued as part of Pakistan's WWF conservation series, the Astor Markhor coin was one of several gold and silver pieces struck to fund international wildlife preservation efforts — an unusual use of a national coinage program that reflected growing global pressure on developing nations to demonstrate environmental commitment. The markhor, a large wild goat native to the mountain ranges of northern Pakistan and Afghanistan, had seen dramatic population decline due to trophy hunting and habitat encroachment.
The series was produced in limited quantities by the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation. Fr#1 designation confirms this as the first gold type listed for Pakistan in Friedberg's gold coin reference.
