Bhutan's millennial dragon coin was issued by the Royal Monetary Authority to mark the year 2000 coinciding with the Bhutanese Year of the Iron Dragon — a convergence that occurs only once every sixty years within the traditional Tibetan-derived calendar cycle. The iron dragon year carries particular astrological weight in Bhutanese culture, and the timing gave the RMA a rare occasion to produce a prestige issue with genuine ceremonial significance rather than purely as a bullion or collector vehicle.
Mintage was tightly controlled, as has been consistent RMA practice for gold issues of this denomination.
