Obverse description The central field displays the elaborate National Emblem of Bhutan, featuring a double vajra (dorje) at the centre encircled by a jewel-tipped lotus blossom at the base, with two finely detailed druk (thunder dragons) rampant on either side, their bodies coiling amid stylised clouds rendered in high relief. A lotus blossom issues from the base, symbolising purity, while the entire composition is enclosed within a beaded inner border. Six six-pointed star ornaments are spaced evenly around the inner legend border. The Dzongkha legend appears in the upper field in Tibetan script, while the Latin legend KINGDOM OF BHUTAN is inscribed along the lower periphery.

The figure is set before the trunk and spreading canopy of the sacred Mahabodhi (Bodhi) Tree, whose heart-shaped leaves fill the upper field. The inscription W.F.B.Y. flanked by dharma wheel symbols appears on the left, with LORD BUDDHA and THE ENLIGHTENMENT arcing around the upper periphery. The denomination 3000 NGULTRUM and date 2003 are inscribed along the lower border, with the fineness notation 1oz GOLD 999.9 in small characters at the lower left field.

Additional information

The World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth, founded in 1950 in Colombo, serves as the primary international coordinating body for Buddhist organizations across dozens of member countries. Bhutan's decision to issue a commemorative in its honor was consistent with the kingdom's policy of reinforcing its Vajrayana Buddhist identity through official coinage — a tradition that accelerated under the Royal Monetary Authority's commemorative program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. These issues were produced almost exclusively for the collector market and saw no domestic circulation.
