Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Queen Margrethe II, depicted wearing a crown and an ornate fur-trimmed robe with detailed lace collar, occupying the central field against a deeply mirrored proof background. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail. The circular legend reads 'MARGRETHE II' to the upper left and 'DANMARKS DRONNING' (Queen of Denmark) to the upper right, separated by a small heart-shaped mintmark of the Royal Danish Mint. The portrait conveys a formal, regal character befitting a commemorative gold issue.

Additional information

Issued to mark Margrethe II's 40th year on the throne — she acceded on 14 January 1972 following the death of her father Frederik IX. Denmark had not issued a circulating gold coin since the early twentieth century, and modern Danish gold commemoratives are struck in limited quantities for collectors rather than circulation, keeping survivor populations unusually intact.
