| Additional information |
Francisco Solano López led Paraguay into the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870) against Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay simultaneously — a conflict that killed an estimated 60–70% of Paraguay's total population and over 90% of its adult male population. The postwar country was so demographically destroyed that it took generations to recover any semblance of its pre-war numbers.
This 1973 issue appeared under Alfredo Stroessner's dictatorship, which actively rehabilitated López as a nationalist hero to shore up Paraguayan identity — a deliberate political reframing of a commander whose decisions had come close to erasing the nation entirely.
