The BEAC issues collector coins on behalf of its six member states — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo — none of which operate independent mints. These fractional gold pieces are struck under contract in Europe, primarily for the international numismatic market rather than any domestic circulation. The Mercury meteorite series draws on renewed scientific interest following NASA's MESSENGER mission, which completed its orbital survey of Mercury in 2015 before being deliberately crashed into the planet's surface.
