The Maria Theresa Thaler is one of history's most durable trade coins — struck continuously since 1780, always bearing that date, and used as a hard-currency standard across East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula well into the twentieth century. Chad's miniaturized gold tribute to it is a modern bullion novelty with no connection to that trade history beyond the borrowed design.
