Issued to mark the 120th anniversary of John von Neumann's birth, this coin honors a Budapest-born mathematician whose contributions to quantum mechanics, game theory, and the architecture of modern computing place him among the most consequential scientific minds of the twentieth century. Von Neumann left Hungary in the 1920s, eventually joining the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and later became a key figure in the Manhattan Project's computational work at Los Alamos.
Hungary has a long tradition of commemorating its diaspora scientists in this format — von Neumann joins Semmelweis and Bolyai in the Magyar Nemzeti Bank's ongoing commemorative program. He died in 1957 while still under US government security clearance, his final hospital conversations reportedly monitored by military intelligence.
