| Additional information |
Deák Ferenc — known as "the Sage of the Nation" — was the architect of the 1867 Compromise that transformed the Austrian Empire into the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, a political settlement that defined Central European borders and governance for half a century. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank has issued commemorative forints honoring significant Hungarian historical figures with some regularity, and Deák's placement in that canon is uncontroversial. He died in 1876, having never held the prime ministership he arguably deserved more than anyone who did.
