This piece belongs to a wave of ultra-high-relief, large-format gold issues that emerged from the Perth Mint's contract work for Pacific island nations in the 2010s — Niue's nominal sovereignty providing the legal issuing authority while Australia supplied the metallurgical and artistic infrastructure. Alexander III is an unusual subject for this treatment: a tsar best remembered for reversing his father's cautious reforms, accelerating Russification policies across the empire, and dying in 1894 at 49 from nephritis, leaving Nicholas II wholly unprepared for what followed.
