The Perth Mint's 1-kilogram gold issues in this lunar series were produced in strictly limited numbers — the 2001 Year of the Snake being no exception, with a mintage capped at 88 pieces, a figure chosen deliberately for its auspicious associations in Chinese numerology. The bulk of demand came from Southeast Asian collectors and institutional buyers, not domestic Australian ones.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II used here, by Ian Rank-Broadley, had been adopted across Australian coinage from 1999 onward following the Royal Mint's own transition.
