Australia's platinum Koala series launched in 1987, giving the Perth Mint a direct competitor to the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle in the investment bullion market. The 1 kg denomination was the anchor of the range — a deliberate statement of ambition from a mint that had only regained full operational independence from the British Royal Mint's oversight structure in the 1970s. At spot prices anywhere near the early 1990s platinum market, each of these coins represented roughly $13,000–$14,000 USD in metal alone.
