Additional information

The Hospital San Juan de Dios in San José, founded in 1845, was the first public hospital in Costa Rica and remains operational today. Its construction was driven largely by the coffee export economy that defined the country's 19th-century finances — the same wealth that funded the Banco Central's institutional predecessors. This coin belongs to a series of commemorative issues the Banco Central produced through the 1990s tying national heritage sites to the silver proof market.
