| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a richly detailed composition set against a finely engraved bamboo-leaf background across the entire field. Two selectively gold-plated medallion-style insets depict giant pandas in different poses: the upper inset shows a seated panda cub holding a bamboo sprig, accompanied by the inscription 成色99.9% 含纯金1盎司 (Purity 99.9%, containing 1 troy ounce of pure gold); the lower, larger inset depicts an adult panda walking amid bamboo stalks with the legend 1oz Au 999 and the denomination 500元. The denomination 300元 appears in large numerals at the lower right of the silver field, while the inscription 1kg Ag.999 is prominently displayed at the upper left, indicating the coin's silver weight and fineness. |

China's Panda bullion program launched in 1982, and by 2002 the series had accumulated enough collector prestige to justify a commemorative kilogram issue. The selective gold plating technique applied here — gilding specific design elements while leaving the remaining silver fields mirrored — was a production approach the Shanghai and Shenyang mints had been refining through the 1990s on various commemorative issues, though consistency between individual pieces can vary noticeably.
Mintage figures for this issue were tightly controlled, as was standard practice for PRC commemorative kilograms aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
