China's Panda bullion program launched in 1982, and by 2002 the series had accumulated enough collector prestige to justify a commemorative kilogram issue. The selective gold plating technique applied here — gilding specific design elements while leaving the remaining silver fields mirrored — was a production approach the Shanghai and Shenyang mints had been refining through the 1990s on various commemorative issues, though consistency between individual pieces can vary noticeably.
