The Bukharan People's Soviet Republic was a short-lived Soviet satellite that replaced the Emirate of Bukhara in 1920 — yet this note predates that transition, issued under the crumbling Emirate's final administrative structures in 1918. The dating alone makes the issuing authority attribution complicated: "People's Soviet Republic" branding was retrospectively applied to earlier emissions as the new regime consolidated control and absorbed existing Treasury stocks.
The tenga itself was a Central Asian unit with deep roots in the region's khanate-era coinage, and its survival into paper form reflects how thoroughly local monetary custom resisted Russification well into the Soviet period.
