| Obverse description | Central field features a traditional Nepalese decorative panel divided into six compartments, each bearing a portion of the royal name and titulature of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev in Devanagari script. A Vishnu trident symbol occupies the central junction of the panel divisions. The upper arc bears the honorific inscription 'Shri Shri' in Devanagari, while the lower arc displays the Vikram Samvat date 2047. The entire design is enclosed within an ornate border of beaded dots and stylized foliate and conch motifs in traditional Nepalese royal style. |

The 1990 date is the critical detail here. Nepal's political upheaval that year — the Jana Andolan movement — forced King Birendra to abandon the Panchayat system and accept a constitutional monarchy, ending three decades of party-less authoritarian rule. This coin commemorates that new constitution, making it the rare case of a monarch issuing a coin that explicitly marks the curtailment of his own absolute power. The timing of the strike, almost certainly authorized before the full extent of democratic reforms was clear, gives the issue an unintentional irony.
