The oval countermark, struck on behalf of the Portuguese Crown in 1887, displays the crowned monogram above a Portuguese royal shield, overstruck upon the field of the host coin. The underlying design elements of the original Spanish 2 Reales are visible beneath, with partial legend legible around the periphery. The countermark authenticates the coin's revaluation for circulation in the Azores at 300 Réis. |

The original milled edge design of the Spanish colonial coinage is visible, though the surfaces exhibit characteristic wear and disturbance associated with countermarked host coins.
