Colombia convened the 39th International Eucharistic Congress in Bogotá in August 1968, the first time the Congress had been held in South America. Pope Paul VI attended in person — the first papal visit to Latin America — arriving just weeks after he had issued Humanae Vitae, which made his reception there politically charged from the outset.
The coin was struck expressly as a commemorative for the event, not for general circulation.
