Bhutan's Royal Monetary Authority issued a succession of lunar year commemoratives through the 1990s primarily for the collector export market — these pieces saw no meaningful domestic circulation and were distributed almost exclusively through international coin dealers and Franklin Mint-style subscription programs. The Year of the Rooster falls in the traditional Tibetan-influenced calendar system Bhutan shares with much of the Himalayan region, where the Rooster cycle recurs every twelve years.
