The legend KINGDOM OF BHUTAN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin script, while the dual dates 1996 appear flanking the emblem at the lower sides. Below the emblem, an inscription in Dzongkha script runs along the lower margin. The design is rendered in high relief with a polished proof finish. |

Bhutan's lunar series coins of the 1990s were produced primarily for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation — the ngultrum was pegged to the Indian rupee and ordinary Bhutanese commerce ran on that parity. The Royal Monetary Authority issued these pieces through external minting contractors, and KM#93 is among the more modestly distributed entries in the set.
The 1996 Year of the Pig corresponds to the Bhutanese year 2123 in their traditional Bhutanese lunar calendar.
