The Banca d'Italia tolerated but did not officially sanction these emissions, which created a legally ambiguous parallel circulation that persisted until the State cracked down in the early 1980s.
The Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto was one of dozens of regional institutions that filled the gap. Printed locally by Stampa Rapida rather than a specialist security printer, these notes lack the intaglio work of proper currency — a practical choice given their intended short lifespan as pocket change substitutes.
