The Golden Fleece series issued by the National Bank of Georgia draws on the ancient Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts, in which Colchis — the kingdom at the eastern end of the Black Sea, in what is now western Georgia — was the destination of the quest. Ancient accounts of gold-panning techniques in the Caucasus region, where sheepskins were used to trap alluvial gold particles from river beds, are now widely considered the factual basis behind the myth itself.
