Chad's independence issues of 1970 were part of a broader wave of commemorative silver struck for Francophone African nations by the Paris Mint, many of which saw negligible actual circulation in the issuing countries. The coins were produced largely for the international collector market, a practice the French monetary authorities actively facilitated through the Monnaie de Paris in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
