Obverse description At center, within a finely engraved pinwheel guilloche border, appears the uniformed effigy of King Felipe VI facing left, wearing the insignia of Captain General. Surrounding this central portrait, within a second concentric pinwheel guilloche band, are reproduced the obverse and reverse of an eight-reales coin and a Flowing Hair Dollar of 1794 — the first silver dollar struck by the United States — each pair separated by a fleur-de-lis ornament. The outermost decorative band also incorporates the obverse and reverse of a Joachimsthaler, the progenitor of the dollar coinage tradition. The legend HISTORIA DEL DÓLAR / HISTORY OF THE DOLLAR arcs around the design, accompanied by FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA.

Reverse description At center, the Pillars of Hercules rise prominently, each column entwined with a band bearing the motto PLVS VLTRA, with the Madrid mint mark (M) positioned below. Encircling this central device, within a concentric band, are the obverse and reverse likenesses of four historic thalers: a Reichsthaler, a Leeuwendaalder (Lion Dollar), a Speciedaler, and, in the lower arc, a Maria Theresa Thaler. The entire composition is framed by an outer guilloche border of pine-nut motifs, interrupted at the upper and lower poles. The peripheral legend reads ESPAÑA 2017 300 EURO PLUS ULTRA M.
