Pope John Paul II's 1979 Caribbean tour — his first major international journey after taking office in October 1978 — prompted several Eastern Caribbean nations to issue commemorative gold. Dominica's piece was struck during an extraordinarily turbulent moment in the island's history: the country had achieved independence only in November 1978, and by mid-1979 Prime Minister Patrick John's government was collapsing under coup attempts and mass protests that would force him from power before the year ended.
The papal visit itself never included a stop in Dominica.
