Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing a jewelled crown, as modelled by Arnold Machin. The effigy occupies the central field with finely rendered hair detail. The circumferential legend COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA arcs across the upper field, while the independence date NOV. 3 1978 is divided to either side of the portrait at centre. The word INDEPENDENCE appears along the lower rim, commemorating Dominica's attainment of sovereignty.

The Valcambi mint mark (CHI) appears to the right of the bust. The legend JOHN PAUL II flanked by star stops arcs across the upper field, while the circumferential inscription VISIT TO REP. DOMINICANA-MEXICO-BAHAMAS-JANUARY 1979 encircles the design. The denomination 300 DOLLARS is inscribed in two lines across the lower field.
