Issued to mark Bhumibol Adulyadej's fiftieth year on the throne — the longest reign of any monarch in Thai history at that point — this coin was part of a broader commemorative program that included gold issues and a globally televised ceremony attended by over forty foreign heads of state. The jubilee fell on June 9, 1996, exactly five decades after his formal coronation following the disputed death of his brother Ananda, Rama VIII, whose fatal shooting in 1946 remains officially unresolved.
