Annweiler am Trifels is a small Palatinate town best known for the ruined castle above it where Richard I of England was held captive in 1193. In 1923, the town's administration was instead preoccupied with a different kind of crisis — printing enough emergency money fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation that was doubling prices within days. The 300,000 Mark denomination places this note squarely in the mid-1923 acceleration phase, before the astronomical figures of the autumn.
H. Hübner's Nachf. was a local commercial printer, not a specialist currency house. Notgeld at this level of inflation was often produced on whatever press and stock was available locally.
