Issued on the thirtieth anniversary of the Gdańsk Agreement, this coin commemorates the August 1980 strikes that produced Solidarity — the first independent trade union permitted in a Soviet-bloc country. The agreement, signed on August 31st, was extracted from the communist government by Lech Wałęsa's inter-factory strike committee after seventeen days of occupation strikes at the Lenin Shipyard.
The 1.7g gold format places it among the NBP's smaller commemorative issues, struck in limited numbers for the collector market rather than circulation.
